Activities

The Volunteers of the KNC organize more than two dozen types of activities, throughout all four seasons. Browse these lists; you are sure to find something to enjoy!

For the outdoorsy type

Golf - Men's 18 hole

This group plays regular full rounds on Wednesdays and Fridays from the end of March through October. You can play twice a week, or just once a year — whatever you wish. Just come out and enjoy a fine walk and great company — spoiled, of course, only by the golf! An activity for both KNC members and alumni (KNA), we rotate among four local golf courses: Kelowna Springs, Sunset RanchShannon Lake and Shadow Ridge.

Golf - Ladies 9 hole

The Ladies 9-hole golf group plays Thursday mornings from early May to mid-October at the Kelowna Springs Golf Course. This is a relaxed, non-competitive activity on a flat and walkable course. We welcome golfers of all skill levels, but some experience is required and a basic knowledge of golfing etiquette is expected. Our early-morning tee times are followed by a full breakfast at the clubhouse.

Golf - Mixed 9 hole

The Mixed 9-hole golf group meets at Kelowna Springs Golf Course very early Wednesday mornings from April until the end of the golf season. We usually play the back-9, then reward ourselves with a scrumptious breakfast in the clubhouse. This fun, non-competitive activity for golfers of all skill levels is open to couples and singles, women and men, in both the KNC and the KNA (alumni).

Gardening

We're all new to the area and face a variety of unfamiliar gardening challenges. What plants do well in this arid climate, coupled with frosty winters? How do we deal with deer and other critters destroying our gardens? The Gardening group, which is open to men and women, experienced gardeners and novices, gets underway in March and runs through to about October. We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month, rotating through the homes of group members. We typically start with coffee or tea and an informal visit of the host's garden. We then move to more formal discussions of previously agreed-upon topics. We sometimes welcome guest specialists or organize outings to show gardens.

Dragon Boating

Interested in improving your fitness, meeting new people and having a lot of fun? Join this very popular new activity, for men and ladies. No experience necessary. You don’t even need to be a swimmer! The activity begins in late-May with weekly practice sessions on beautiful Okanagan Lake. We start at 5 or 5:30 p.m. with a half-hour dry-land warm-up, followed by an hour on the water. The cost for 16 weekly practices is $100. After each practice, we meet at a local restaurant for a beverage, a bite to eat and a chance to socialize. Dragon boating is a joint activity of the KNC and the Kelowna Newcomers Alumni, offered in conjunction with the Kelowna Dragon Boat Club. The Club supplies the boat, life jackets, paddles, a coach and a steerer for each practice session.

Walking

Grab your camera and join us Thursday mornings, all year round, for an easy to moderate one-hour walk, followed by a chance to chat some more at a local coffee shop. We have more than 50 scenic walks in our catalogue, in locations ranging from Lake Country to Peachland. We set off at 9 a.m. in the summer months, and 9:30 a.m. the rest of the year. Walk schedules, descriptions, directions and start times are sent in advance to all registered walkers. Once you're on our list, you don't need to sign up again each week; just show up and meet your fellow walkers. Walks are always led by co-ordinators or their designates. A stop afterwards for coffee and goodies at one of the many wonderful cafés in the area gives everyone a chance to socialize some more and to meet new friends. This group, which is also open to Alumni of the KNC (KNA), offers fresh air, friendship, and a fine way to get to know your new community.

Snowshoeing

If you've ever wanted to strap on a pair of snowshoes and stomp through forests and fields, this group is for you! We welcome all snowshoe enthusiasts, no matter what your skill level. On the second Monday and fourth Wednesday of the winter months, we explore a wide variety of trails at West Kelowna's  Telemark Nordic Club.

For the social type

Hockey night

Many newcomers quickly develop into enthusiastic fans of the Kelowna Rockets major junior hockey team. In this group, we welcome everyone to game nights with a casual get-together at a local Kelowna watering hole, then join the cheering throngs in the Prospera Place stands. Ticket prices for regular league games range from $15 to $17, depending on the number of people signed up to attend. If 10 or more people come out for a game, a discounted group rate applies.

Canasta

Come join us for a fun-filled afternoon of cards, socializing, and food. We meet every second Friday afternoon, alternating between EK's Grill and Dakoda's Sports Bar & Grill. You do not need to know anything about canasta. Our game is a simple, quick version, where we play three games, mixing partners each time. Even if it’s your first time, you'll catch on quickly. Stay for an early dinner afterwards, because we have a lot of fun chatting and getting to know one another over a leisurely meal.

Solos

For Kelowna newcomers who are single and looking to meet others like them, our ever-popular KNC Solos group is a great place to start. Our goal is to develop lasting friendships, and to share with those friends the many activities that Kelowna has to offer. Unattached KNC members are always enthusiastically welcomed at all KNC events and activities, but some people prefer to attend with one or more others. The Solos group facilitates the networking and friendship-building that helps that happen. We meet at a minimum on the Saturday after each KNC monthly meeting, typically for a potluck dinner.

Five-pin bowling

This fun league, which has been running for more than 25 years, is for all skill levels. No experience is required; in fact, it's best if you forget how you once played! Between September and April we play Tuesdays at Capri Bowling Lanes. You are welcome to bowl as a regular team member or a spare. We have a handicap scoring system to help keep things on a level playing field. Each year we aim for balanced competition by forming new mixed teams based on previous year averages. There's plenty of socializing and laughter (mostly about bowling!) There's a lunch once a month, as well as a year-end banquet where cash prizes of over $900 are supplemented by proceeds from the weekly 50/50 draw. This is a joint activity with the Kelowna Newcomers Alumni.

Ladies bridge

The Ladies Bridge group meets for three hours in the afternoons on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. Players take turns hosting games in their homes, and the hostess provides light refreshments. Each player contributes a loonie, which is returned in prizes at the end of the day. Our games are fun and our purpose is to build friendships over an activity we all enjoy.

Ladies book clubs

This is a very popular and fun activity with several separate groups, depending on the number of women signed up in a given year. Each group meets monthly from September to June to discuss books on its agreed-upon reading list. Currently most groups meet in the afternoons, and one in the evening. Each group starts by discussing its chosen book, followed by socializing and light refreshments. Members take turns playing host at their homes.

For the curious mind

Arts and Culture

Kelowna and towns in the surrounding area have so many museums, theatres, art shows and other cultural activities to offer. Sign up with this group to participate in these activities with other like-minded newcomers. Each month we try to visit a local artist or cultural event. We have seen plays and visited the studios of sculptors and other visual artists working with acrylic, water colours, wood, fibre, stone and other innovative media.

Art of Photography

KNC shutterbugs meet on the third Friday of the month to discuss the art of photography and to go on group shoots. Although photography is a solo hobby, our group is about sharing tips and constructive feedback as we visit art and photo exhibits and invite experts to help us hone our skills. Whether you use a phone camera, a compact digital or a professional DSLR, everyone is welcome!

Tour Kelowna

Come and discover some of the hidden gems of the Central Okanagan. Once a month, typically on the fourth Wednesday, we organize a tour of an area business or tourist attraction. In the past, we have visited sites as diverse as Campion Boats, Global Okanagan, the Gorman Brothers Lumber Mill, the Okanagan Observatory, the Okanagan Military Museum and the Okanagan Wine & Orchard Museum. We've also enjoyed educational and informative walking tours of the historic downtown area.

Out on the town

Men's coffee

The men of the KNC meet on Tuesday mornings at a café on Springfield Road. Coffee, a variety of breakfast treats and good camaraderie are on the menu. It's a casual drop-in affair, and new members are always welcome.

Ladies lunch

We meet at 11:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. We discover a new restaurant each time, while engaging in friendly conversation over delicious food.

Dining out

Our group meets for dinner at a local restaurant at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Several weeks prior to each dinner, members who have signed up for this group receive an e-mailed invitation with the details of our next adventure. This invitation opens up the registration process, and registrations are accepted in the order that we receive them. We try to choose interesting and reasonably-priced restaurants. In the past, we've been to Blu Saffron Bistro, Social 242 Lounge and Grill, Moxie's, and Olympia Greek Taverna. You can join our group by e-mail or by visiting our table at the next KNC general meeting.

Wine tasting

The Wine Tasting group meets every second Saturday of the month at one of the region's many splendid wineries. We sample their wares, while nibbling on appetizers from the winery's restaurant. We have also met in the past at a wine bar and other non-winery venues, where we have invited experts to share their knowledge about the noble grape.

Beer tasting

Join the Beer Tasting group for delicious beverages, great conversation and some hearty pub grub. Pub Nights are generally Thursday evenings and begin at 5 p.m. at a casual and friendly central Kelowna establishment. This group also has special beer tastings twice a year.

West side pub night

Do you want to get to know more newcomers living in West Kelowna? Join us for drinks, pub food and plenty of laughter. We meet at 4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at a terrific establishment in downtown West Kelowna.

Home is our castle

Ladies coffee

We gather at KNC member's homes from 10 a.m. to noon on the first Wednesday of each month. These are casual get-togethers aimed at meeting new friends and learning about the community. Members of the group are encouraged to host coffee events, or to bring goodies to the homes of others.  You can sign up at a KNC general meeting or by emailing the group's coordinators. An email goes out monthly with directions to the next hostess's home. Above all, enjoy!

Ladies potluck lunch

This is a fun and very social group that meets at group members' homes at noon on the third Friday of each month. We mingle over appetizers, then sit and enjoy a lively lunch together, potluck style. We switch seating for dessert to maximize the opportunity to converse with new members. Members of this group sign up to bring an appetizer, a main dish (either meat or veggie), salad or dessert. The hostess will supply coffee, tea and water. Alternative bevies are strictly BYOB.

Dining in

The KNC is a great way to get acquainted with other recent arrivals to the area. Sharing an evening of good food and lively conversation at someone's home helps you get to know people a little better. Every third Saturday of the month (except December), members of the Dining In group take turns hosting dinners for six to eight people (including the hosts) in their homes. Hosts are responsible for the main course, while guests contribute appetizers, salads or desserts. This is a wonderful opportunity to try new recipes or to share old favourites (even if they come from Costco!) Everyone is responsible for providing his or her own beverage. Everyone in the group should be willing to host two to three dinners per year. Couples and singles are welcome.
